Born in Chicago, a Cub Scout, White Sox fan,
won a
Bulova watch and a $500 US Savings Bond on TV talent
show playing
"Fiddle Faddle" on the piano at age 11.
Heavily influenced by localradio
personality/pianist/singer/cut up Two Ton Baker,
sang in the church choir,
graduated late from Arlington Heights HS,
somehow got into Northwestern Univ.
School of Music and discovered it
was too square for his jazzy fingers.
Ended up with a BA in Radio/TV/Film
followed by a stint as a Madison Avenue copywriter on
Tide detergent and
Viceroy cigarettes
("Don't Settle For Some Of The Taste Some Of The Time -
Viceroy Gives You All The Taste All The Time").
Then on to songwriting
for "New Faces" of 1968 and a couple
of off Broadway shows. Songs
recorded by Slim Whitman,
Leon Bibb, Margaret Whiting, Robie Porter,
Frankie Avalon,
The Strawberry Alarm Clock.
His jingle biz started in NY
and flew out to
relocation in LA with many ditties
- all the way from Close
Up Toothpaste to Purina Puppy Chow.
When the jingle died, CF cranked up
a
greeting card company called "Personalplates" with
full sized license
plates (2/joined) "U TURN / ME ON" etc.
Then fate took a far eastern
turn when the Autoholic
(having owned as many as 10 cars at one time)
headed for Japan's ears which are always hungry
for the American
Songbook.
Became the world's leading authority/doctor/pitchman
plugging
the #1 mizu mushi (athletes foot "PORICAIN")
medication on TV in Japan.
"Lobe
Riders" license plate earrings followed in the midst
with "LOOKIN4 /
MRRIGHT" etc. and still
hangs as a side bar from an occasional ear lobe.
Carl's one man show "1MANACT" is the culmination
or maybe the accumulation of the aforementioned.
Recorded early piano & vocals (played by ear)
direct to disc before beginning formal piano lessons age 5.
